Present Tense: Talking about Time

Join KW|AG on Thursday, December 1 at 7:00 pm for a special panel discussion held in conjunction with our current exhibition, The Limits, curated by Crystal Mowry. 
Special guest speakers include author Sheila Heti, composer Peter Hatch and physicist Lee Smolin.

Engaging one of the major themes of the exhibition, our guest speakers are invited to offer their 15 minutes on "time" as it relates to their professional practice, followed by an informal conversation between our panellists and audience. 

It would be a challenge to imagine a system of measurement that continues to shape our culture, idioms, and discoveries more than measurements of time.  Yet an attempt to characterize time entails discussions much more elusive than a simple order of measurement would suggest. 

We hope you will join us for what is sure to be an interesting and dynamic cross-disciplinary conversation about a topic that keeps on ticking.

Speaker Bios:

	Sheila Heti lives in Toronto and works as Interview Editor of The Believer. She is the founder of the innovative Trampoline Hall lecture series, and is the author of the short story collection, The Middle Stories, and the novel, Ticknor, among others. Heti studied playwriting at the National Theatre School in Montreal before attending the University of Toronto to study art history and philosophy.
	Peter Hatch is a composer, concert organizer and teacher whose works are in a large number of genres, from orchestral and chamber music to instrumental theatre, electroacoustics and installations. He received a DMA degree from the University of British Columbia following MusBac and MusM degrees from the University of Toronto.  His works have won recognition with composer competitions held by CBC Radio, SOCAN, the Winnipeg New Music Festival and Vancouver New Music  Hatch is a professor at the Faculty of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University.
	Lee Smolin was born in New York City. He is a founding member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, primarily contributing to the field of quantum gravity and currently writing about the theme of the reality of time. He attended Hampshire College and the University of Cincinnati, graduating from Hampshire in 1975 with a degree in Physics and Philosophy.  He also attended Harvard University for graduate school and had held postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, The Institute for Theoretical Physics (now KITP) in Santa Barbara and the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago.
