"Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." - Hannah Arendt
Any story about museums would have to include a chapter on collecting.
Whether it is motivated by individual or institutional interests, a collection can tell a story that becomes an unconventional portrait of the collector as well the collected. Over the course of 50 years, KW|AG has sought to tell a story about our community through the items we have preserved. Our history is your history.
Though the items that we identify as part of our Permanent Collection are, for the most part, "art objects", there are a myriad of unusual treasures within the institution that illuminate the history of KW|AG within its regional community. Among the items featured in the exhibition are several artworks which KW|AG has commissioned over the years. This exhibit will also premiere the most recent commissions that are part of our ongoing Parochial Views photographic series.
The Information Age may have made us more accustomed to non-linearity and volumes of information, but meaning is much more elusive and personal. The curious selection of artworks and artefacts featured in A Telling Story reveal a non-linear, and conversational version of the KW|AG story. Though objects may be grouped in a fashion that might imply a particular reading, we also encourage visitors to spend some time in the corridor and imagine other curious relationships that might animate our collection. We leave the hunt for meaning up to you.
